The aim of this project is to document the coin finds from Aelium Cetium (modern-day St. Pölten) and to analyse them within their archaeological contexts, with particular focus on the circulation of money in late antique Austria.

As part of the large-scale project »Fundmünzen der römischen Zeit in Österreich« (FMRÖ), which was established at the ÖAW in 1971, this endeavour was initiated as FMRÖ III/3 in cooperation with the Stadtarchäologie St. Pölten , to document and review the mostly ancient coin finds from past and currently ongoing excavations in Aelium Cetium (St. Pölten). The focus is on identifying the coin finds, as well as cataloguing and scientifically analysing them in the foreseeable future, with the aim of publishing a new edition as well as adding to the previously published volumes of the FMRÖ, as the third volume of Abteilung III Niederösterreich, titled »Die antiken Fundmünzen aus Aelium Cetium (St. Pölten)«. Archaeological contexts, if available, as well as local peculiarities and coin circulation in late antiquity in general will be taken into account. The collected data will be incorporated into the dFMRÖ database , a digital supplement to the FMRÖ project, and made freely accessible.
