The project is dedicated to the systematic examination and analysis of ancient coin finds from present-day Vienna (Vindobona and its surrounding area), with particular attention to their archaeological contexts. Conducted within the framework of the long-term project Coin Finds of the Roman Period in Austria (FMRÖ) at the ÖAW, it involves the preparation of a revised edition of volume FMRÖ IX (first published in 1978) in collaboration with the Stadtarchäologie Wien and the Wien Museum.

The project focuses on newly discovered coins and older finds, as well as data drawn from the Austrian Archaeological Institute’s coin-find records. Its objective is a context-based investigation of the diachronic development of monetary circulation, with particular emphasis on the period from the 2nd century AD to Late Antiquity. The coin finds are examined according to their settlement contexts (e.g., legionary camp, canabae legionis, civilian settlement, and surrounding areas) in order to identify functional variations in patterns of monetary circulation. A comparative analysis across regions, including other legionary camps along the Danube limes such as Carnuntum and Lauriacum, represents a further key component of the study.

The data will be integrated into the dFMRÖ database and made available digitally. In addition, the coin data will be incorporated into the City of Viennaʼs GIS system, making them accessible to a wider public.
