The Digital Archaeology and Classics (DAC) unit works at the interface between archaeology/classical studies and information technology/computer science. It supports researchers at the OeAI in submitting applications for projects regarding data management conception and in ongoing projects that deal with generated research data.

Of great importance for research practice is the development of administration, management and archiving solutions for various data collections, which is carried out in close cooperation with the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH) of the OeAW. Another major challenge is the development of research infrastructures through which archaeological and classical data can be made available to the scientific community, for example via open web platforms.

In addition, the unit has extensive expertise in dealing with 3D data acquisition using photographic and laser scanning methods. Core tasks include the processing and visualization of complex 3D models as well as the reconstruction of monuments and archaeological-historical landscapes.
