The library of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) in Vienna is the largest specialist archaeological library in Austria. By merging the holdings of the Departments of Classical Studies, Historical Archaeology and Prehistory & WANA Archaeology, the library currently comprises around 70,000 volumes, including numerous specialist journals and series. The collection is also enriched by a considerable number of permanent loans from the Austrian Academy of Sciences BAS:IS - Library, Archive, Collections: Information & Service.
The focus of the collection is broadly diversified. It includes the fields of classical archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics and monetary history, Egyptology, prehistory and historical archaeology. Separate areas are dedicated to conservation and cultural heritage, geo- and bioarchaeology and archaeometry.
A reading room in the Otto Wagner Postsparkasse building is available for users of the library of the Austrian Archaeological Institute. It is located in the Small Cashier's Hall and is accessible via the entrance at Dominikanerbastei 16, 1010 Vienna.
Together with the library holdings of the Institute of Iranian Studies, OeAI books can be used in the reading room after prior registration by e-mail to oeai-bibliothek(at)oeaw.ac.at .
Books can be ordered via the OeAW catalogue using the BAS:IS user card or by mail. Orders must be placed by 2 pm the day before at the latest. Ordered books will then be made available in the library office, entrance Dominikanerbastei 16, diagonally opposite the Small Cashier's Hall.
