On 1 January 2013, the research group »Epigraphy« grew out of the »Asia Minor Commission« that had been founded in 1890 as the »Commission for Archaeological Research in Asia Minor« and that had been combined from 1974–1988 with the »Commission for Mycenaean Research«. Its area of responsibilities is Greek and Latin epigraphy of the ancient world with a geographical focus on Asia Minor, justified by its prior history.

With its approx. 10,000 copies and approx. 60,000 sketchbook pages of inscriptions and scrolls from Asia Minor, the archival collection of the »Epigraphy« research group is the largest collection of its kind in the world.
