The division Historical Identity Research is dedicated to the research on the European Middle Ages in general. Special emphasis is laid on the formation of ethnic and political groups, identity and alterity, as well as structural change. This is achieved on the basis of careful study of the extant source texts, of their manuscript transmission and their context. Moreover, an interdisciplinary, comparative approach is applied, which is employed in a global perspective.

The division consists of three working groups: "Communities, Peoples, Mobility", "Political Transformation and Plurality" and "Textual Networks and Translation Cultures".
