The Department of Byzantine Research is dedicated to the study of the medieval Greek culture of the Eastern Mediterranean as well as its ‘Nachleben’, in three strands: ‘Communities and Landscapes’, ‘Language, Script and Text’ and ‘Byzantium and Beyond: Cultural Heritage and Intercultural Context’.
Employing the methodology of historical-cultural studies, the work on written sources is combined with research on manuscripts and material culture (inscriptions, seals). As a result, there are strong interconnections between the three strands that are in constant dialogue. Digital humanities play an increasing role in the analysis and visualization of research data. Several long-term research projects are complemented by shorter projects, often supported by external funding.
