The projects of this research area illustrate the interplay between spatial as well as social mobility of individuals and groups and the exchange of knowledge, ideas and resources (both material and immaterial) between Byzantium and its immediate neighbours as well as more distant regions across medieval Afro-Eurasia. For this purpose, traditional historical and philological research is combined with new approaches from social studies, linguistics, archaeological theory, digital prosopography and natural sciences.
