Editions and Editorial Methods

This research focus is dedicated to critical editions (philological as well as diplomatic) of documentary and literary texts. The critical editions integrate new methods of reader-relevant understanding of texts, for example with regard to punctuation (stixis).

The need to advance the methods of editorial work led to the creation of an international network of editors at the division of Byzantine Research in 2013: VEDI Vienna Editorial Initiative. The goal of this platform is the discussion of editorial problems and general questions about literary interpretation, including modern digital representations.

In conjunction with the editorial work, new forms of improved visualization of text presentation are being developed. One aspect is not only the faithful reconstruction of the author’s text, but also the relevance and visualization of these texts and their changes through time.
