Reinier Langelaar ist seit 2015 am Institut tätig. Er studierte Religionswissenschaften an der Universität Leiden und erhielt seinen MA in Zentralasienwissenschaften an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Langelaars Dissertation befasste sich mit spätmittelalterlichen „Clan-Genealogien“ (gdung-rabs) und entstand im Rahmen des interdisziplinär vergleichenden Projekts „Visions of Community“ (VISCOM). Derzeit ist er Hauptforscher im FWF-Projekt „Buddhistisches Narrativ und die Ethnogenese der ‘Tibeter’“, das sich mit der Text- und Sozialgeschichte einer weit verbreiteten Ursprungserzählung der 'Tibeter' (tib. bod-mi) und deren Implikationen für die historische Erforschung von Ethnizität und Nationalismus beschäftigt. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen tibetische Verwandtschaft, Sozialgeschichte, Ethnografie und Philologie.
