Andrew Ollett works on the intellectual and literary traditions of premodern India. At the Institute, he is working with Elisa Freschi on two projects related to Mīmāṃsā, the systematic approach to textual interpretation as applied to the Vedas. The first project is about postulation (arthāpatti) and aims at a translation and study of the most important texts concerning postulation in Mīmāṃsā, which was the only philosophical school to accept it as a distinct source of valid knowledge. The second project ("Reasoning Tools for Deontic Logic and Applications to Indian Sacred Texts") is about the logic of deontic concepts in Mīmāṃsā — that is, concepts reflected in commands, prohibitions, and other statements of obligation or permission — and how it might be modeled and studied using the techniques of modern formal logic. Ollett has spent time at the IKGA during the summers of 2016 and 2017.
