Researching Franz Schubert’s manuscripts, dating the sources more precisely, and analyzing the various types of paper have been central objectives of the Vienna research group of the New Schubert Edition since its beginnings in the 1960s, as they provide additional information on the genesis of his works. The present project is dedicated to Schubert’s autographs from the archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. The watermarks appearing in the manuscripts will be made accessible by means of the innovative method of thermography. This includes their digitization, a partly automated, partly qualitative analysis, categorization, and comparison with existing thermograms. These thermograms originate from the project DRACMarkS (Digitization, Recognition and Automated Clustering of Watermarks in the Music Manuscripts of Franz Schubert) funded by Heritage Science Austria and from manuscripts from the world’s largest Schubert autograph collection—the Vienna City Library—as well as from the Austrian National Library. The comprehensive comparison and meta-analysis will be made possible as part of this collaboration with the DRACMarkS project and Schubert-digital. The project not only promises a comprehensive in-depth analysis of the watermarks and paper types in accordance with modern standards; it will also enable dating issues to be addressed in a new way and new insights to be gained.
