This project aimed at editing Arthur Schnitzler’s (1862–1931) literary correspondences with 38 writers and putting them on a website, allowing access to updated correspondences of those that needed revision (the one with Hugo von Hofmannsthal) or had been incompletely edited (the one with Richard Beer-Hofmann) as well as previously unpublished (eg Robert Adam, Max Burckhard, Lou Andreas-Salomé). In addition to the already mentioned, there are among others correspondences with Hermann Bahr, Georg Brandes, Richard Dehmel, Gerhart Hauptmann, Karl Kraus, Laura Marholm, Thomas Mann, Therese Rie, Bertha von Suttner, and Frank Wedekind.
The research community and interested public can now access the professional and friendly network of the Viennese writer, including facsimiles, transcriptions and various indices, such as persons, works, local and organizational registers as well as sender and receiver locations.
Schnitzler as a writer is one of the protagonists of the ‘culture of letters’ so that editing his correspondence in addition to aspects of his biography and work can be suitable as a digital project exemplary for the cultural-scientific research of transnational networks and correspondence research.
