Max Kalbeck: Networking Practices in Vienna 1900

This project, developed in cooperation between the mdw and the ACDH, produces a digital edition of the diaries of music critic and Brahms biographer Max Kalbeck, covering the years 1895 and 1897. The examination of the diaries, which contain hundreds of names, is supplemented by additional sources, including letters, Kalbeck’s Brahms biography, and his friendship album. The diary edition will be linked to the existing ACDH database PMB – Personen der Moderne Basis and expanded to encompass the musical circles around Kalbeck and Brahms. The digital platform provides an ideal environment for visualizing and exploring historical networks in Vienna around 1900. This approach is combined with a research perspective that focuses specifically on practices and routines – in particular, the actions and strategies surrounding the formation, cultivation, and use of social contacts. By combining cultural studies approaches with digital humanities tools, the project promises through an innovative methodological mix to substantially broaden existing perspectives on cultural networks in Vienna 1900.
