As cultural heritage artefacts are the objects of many Digital Humanities research projects, the creation of digital representations with rich metadata is often a necessary first step. In many cases, digitization is already an act of interpretation driven by a certain research question. Beyond mere imaging, this process of digitization is deeply related to data modelling and the data processing workflows of a research project.

In order to support projects in their digitization needs, the ACDH Digitization Centre (run in cooperation with BAS:IS, the library and archive of the Academy) offers consultation with regards to digitization planning (timeline, scan parameters, formats) and acts as a broker for related tasks (OCR/HTR, metadata modelling and curation, preservation). For metadata curation we provide an instance of the software Goobi Workflow jointly with BAS:IS.

Our Digitization Centre offers the equipment and expertise needed for digitizing source materials in a wide range of formats: from devices for scanning loose-leaf materials (WideTek 25-600, Panasonic KV-S2087-U, SMA Scan Master 0 3650) and slides/roll films (Noritsu HS-1800) to more versatile setups like the Traveller’s Conservation Copy Stand or a PhaseOne XF with the RSP 2motion copy stand.

If you are interested in using the facilities and equipment of the ACDH Digitization Centre please contact acdh-digitization(at)oeaw.ac.at.

If you are interested in using the service for OCR/HTR Transkribus please contact transkribus(at)oeaw.ac.at.
