Moving Byzantium highlights the role of Byzantium as a global culture and analyzes the internal flexibility of Byzantine society. Its main focus is to contribute to a re-evaluation of a society and culture that has traditionally been depicted as stiff, rigid and encumbered by its own tradition.

OpenAtlas, a database software developed at the ACDH, is used as a backend for recording, processing, and structuring the research data. The web application based on OpenAtlas makes it possible to explore the information freely accessible online. In addition, mapping and results of the study are presented.
