Approaching Byzantium provides data for analyzing the influence of visits to the city of Constantinople on the reception of Byzantium by humanists of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century.

OpenAtlas, a database software developed at the ACDH, is used as a backend for recording, processing, and structureing the research data. The web application based on OpenAtlas makes it possible to explore the data freely accessible online. In addition, mapping, actor network visualizations, and results of the study are presented.
