ABOUT OUR VILLAGE AND OUR LANGUAGE

Description: Slavka and Ljubiša are born in the village of Luka, a place that used to be populated mostly by Romanian/Vlach speakers in past, other groups have not merged with the local population. Nowadays school children have to drive to another village to attend school. The village has become more linked to the cities, but the number of people living there and speaking the language has also inevitably dwindled. Slavka's narrative comprises the short story of the rural everyday life in a small village and the nostalgia for past times, as she has not been feeling optimistic about the future of her mother tongue – her second language according to educational records – for quite some time now.

THE OLD BAZAAR AND HOW WE USED TO CROSS THE DANUBE

Description: Jelica Milosavljević narrates about years gone by when life used to consist mainly of growing plants and livestock farming in the alpine pasture, a time where people used to walk down to the villages for feasts and celebrations. Jelica used to live with her animals in a farmhouse where winters were hard and she only went down to the village for the holidays.  She recounts how people used to go to Romania by crossing the Danube. As as it was difficult to get a visa back then, people  ended up crossing the border illegally. Furthermore she reminisces about the old bazaar in Negotin that people reached by carriage to sell their goods and buy household necessities.
