PUFF PASTRY, BAKLAVA AND SARAYLI

Description: The desserts of the Meglen Vlachs are strongly influenced by oriental recipes. In this short clip, two housewives from Jimbolia in the western Romanian Banat, whose ancestors came from Oshini (Óšinʲ, now Archangelos) and Ljumnitsa (Lʲúmniʦa, now Skra) in the central Macedonian Meglen area, explain how they roll out the puff pastry and make the siroped specialties baklava and sarayli. Although both puff pastry pies are widespread throughout Southeastern Europe and the Orient and have the same name everywhere, they can immediately recognize the subtle local differences.
