This ultrasound tongue imaging (UTI) system is intended for phonetic research on speech articulation. It is portable and can be used in the lab and in the field. The UTI (Micro Speech Research Ultrasound System, Articulate Instruments Ltd) is coupled to a 5–8 MHz microconvex probe using the Articulatory Assistant Advanced software (AAA, Articulate Instruments Ltd) for recording and data processing. At recording depths of 70 to 80 mm, the system can provide a sampling rate of about 85 to 95 frames per second.
