The launch of the Soviet Venus probes Venera-13 and -14 on 30 October and 4 November 1981 respectively marked the beginning of the IWF's (instrumental) participation in international space missions. The magnetometers for the two space probes were adaptations of the measuring instrument for Spacelab-1, which had been developed earlier, but was not launched into Earth orbit until 1983.
