The first volume of the print edition of the lexicon was published in 1957; it appeared in individual deliveries, with 3-4 deliveries (in earlier volumes: 4-5 deliveries) making up one volume. In addition to the biographies, each volume contains an updated list of sigla and abbreviations as well as a list of the authors. A total of 16 volumes (73 print deliveries) of the lexicon were published with almost 20,000 biographies, covering the letter range “A” to “Zycha”. The 73rd and final print delivery appeared in December 2022; the print edition is now complete.
Originally (in the 1950s) the work was only designed for 3-4 volumes; accordingly, many articles in volumes 1-2 were kept extremely short and often only contained the “most necessary” basic information. However, this requirement was gradually abandoned; some revisions and additions, especially to the first volumes, have appeared in the online edition of the lexicon. All volumes of the Austrian Biographical Lexicon can be ordered from the publishing house of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (VÖAW). The former ÖBL editorial team cannot accept orders.
