Peter Balazs studierte Mathematik und Mathematik/Physik Lehramt an der Universität Wien. 2001 schloss er sein Studium mit einer Diplomarbeit zum Thema Polynome über Gruppen (download hier) mit Auszeichnung ab. Im Juni 2005 beendete er sein Dissertationsstudium mit einer Arbeit über Regular and Irregular Gabor Multiplier with Application to Psychoacoustic Masking (download hier) mit Auszeichnung.
Peter Balazs ist Teil des Institutes seit 1999. Seine Dissertation schrieb er an der NuHaG, Fakultät für Mathematik der Universität Wien. Durch diese Kooperation bekam er die Möglichkeit, mittels des HASSIP EU Network am LATP, CMI und LMA, CNRS Marseille von November 2003 - April 2004 zu studieren und im August 2005 an der FYMA, UCL, Louvain-La-Neuve.
Im Jahr 2011 hat er den Start-preis gewonnen, das nationale Äquivalent zum ERC starting grant in Österreich, und damit der prestigeträchtigste Preis für Jungwissenschafter in Österreich. Im selben Jahr schrieb er seine Habilitaion mit dem Titel "New Concepts in Frame Theory Motivated by Acoustical Applications".
2012 wurde er zum Direktor des Instituts ernannt.
Derzeitige Forschung
Peter Balazs interessiert sich für Zeit-Frequenz-Analysen, Gabor-Analysen, Numerik, Frame-Theorie, Signalverarbeitung, Akustik und Psychoakustik.

Forschung in der Vergangenheit
Peter Balazs arbeitete am Start-Projekt 'Frames and Linear Operators for Acoustical Modeling and Parameter Estimation', das darauf abzielt die Frame Theorie als mathematischen Hintergrund für akustische Modellierung zu etablieren. Mehr Detail hier.
Peter Balazs war Leiter des WWTF-Projekts Frame Multiplier: Theory and Application in Acoustics, das im März 2008 begonnen hat. Diese Projekt fand neue Resultate in der mathematischen Theorie der "Frame Multiplier", integrierte diese in effizienten Signalverarbeitungs-Algorithmen und stellte sie damit konkreten akustischen Anwendungen zur Verfügung. Dieses internationale, multi-disziplinäre und teamorientierte Projekt hat P. Balazs erlaubt, eine kleine Gruppe Mathematik und akustische Signalverarbeitung am Institut für Schallforschung zu gründen, in Zusammenarbeit mit NuHaG Wien (Hans G. Feichtinger), Laboratoire PRISM des LMA / CRNS Marseille (Richard Kronland-Martinet) und der Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille (Bruno Torrésani) sowie FYMA, UCL, Louvain-La-Neuve (Jean-Pierre Antoine). Diese Gruppe ist mittlerweile deutlich gewachsen.
P. Balazs beschäftigte sich mit dem Thema Regular and irregular Gabor multiplier with application to psychoacoustic masking. Mit diesem Projekt bewegte er sich im Schnittfeld von harmonischer Analyse und Psychoakustik. 2006 und 2007 hatte das Institut für Schallforschung in Kooperation mit dem Laboratoire PRISM des LMA / CRNS Marseille ein WTZ-Austauschprojekt zum Thema "Time-Frequency Representation and Perception" bewilligt bekommen. Im August 2005 arbeitete P. Balazs an der FYMA, UCL, Louvain-La-Neuve an der Operator Theorie als Grundlagenforschung für das Projekt.
Seit 1999 arbeitete er auch in der Softwareabteilung an Implementierungen für die Software S_TOOLS-STx in Makro und C++, an Dokumentationen, an der Entwicklung einer Benutzeroberfläche und am Konzept einer Datenbankstruktur. Nach Studienabschluss beschäftigte er sich mehr und mehr mit dem mathematischen und theoretischen Hintergrund der Signalverarbeitung, wobei er im Juni 2003 von der Softwareabteilung zur numerischen Abteilung des Instituts wechselte. Neben anderen Projekten (bspw. die Untersuchung der Phase in der Akustik und die Unterstützung anderer Projekte durch sein mathematisches Wissen und einigen Programmierarbeiten) arbeitete er auch bei dem Projekt "Vibrations in soils and liquids - Transform method for layers with random properties" von Dr. Ing. habil. Waubke mit, das vom FWF gefördert wird.
P. Balazs beschäftigte sich auch mit der diskreten Gaboranalyse und der Gabortheorie in finiter diskreter Umgebung, welche von höchstem Interesse bei jeder Anwendung ist. Im Speziellen arbeitete er an der Untersuchung eines numerisch effizienten Weg, um ein duales Fenster zu entwickeln (ein Fenster, das perfekte Rekonstruktion erlaubt). Er nützte dafür die spezielle Struktur der Gaboranalyse und -synthese für das Doppelte Präkonditionieren des Gabor Frame Operators aus.
