ÖAW Fellowship Antisemitism Research at the Institute of Culture Studies in Memory of Heidemarie Uhl

In 2023, the Antisemitism Research Group was established at the Austrian Academy of Sciences with the goal of conducting the first comprehensive research on contemporary antisemitism in Austria in an institutionalized form.

The ÖAW invites applications for fellowships at all career levels (from praedoc) - with the aim of closing research desiderata in the field of antisemitism research in Austria. The focus of this call is on manifestations of antisemitism since 1945.

The new attention to the presence of the phenomenon, which was often thought to have been overcome, that could be observed at the beginning of the 1980s is particularly evident in the research that has now begun. John Bunzl, Bernd Marin (1983) and Hilde Weiss (1981/84) published pioneering sociological studies on antisemitism in Austria. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism was founded at the Technical University of Berlin in 1982. Since the Waldheim debate in 1986, it became evident that antisemitism was not limited to the generation shaped by National Socialism, but was also activated by new generations, in part with altered content.

Application deadline: November 05, 2023

Project start: 1st quarter 2024

Project location: VIENNA

OBJECTIVE

Within the framework of the ÖAW Fellowship, the following areas will be investigated: Experiences of Jews in dealing with subcutaneously transmitted, but also openly expressed antisemitism. How have Jews living in Austria, how has the Jewish Community in Vienna, but also a critical civil society reacted to an environment that continues to be characterized by antisemitism? Applicants from postdoc onwards should comparatively investigate similarities and differences between Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany with regard to experiences, dealing with and transmission of antisemitic attitudes and codes and their transformations since 1945.

In order to illustrate the possible diversity of research perspectives, exemplary topics are outlined below:

  • Comparative analysis of debates about anti-Semitic attitudes, incidents, and assaults;
  • Changes in scholarly explanatory models of the presence and transmission of antisemitism since 1945 in Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany;
  • Comparison and analysis of projects of historical-political information and education for the prevention of anti-Semitism.

The questions mentioned here are to be understood as exemplary case studies for the range of the field of investigation. Central is the perspective of comparison with regard to similarities and differences in the presence of and dealing with antisemitic attitudes as well as the question of their transformations since 1945. Applications from all fields of the humanities, social sciences and cultural studies are welcome.

The scope of the project, and thus the topic proposed in the application, should be appropriate to the respective career stage of the applicant(s).
