The Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) kept a diary for most of his life, in which he noted where he was and what excursions he had undertaken. He himself commissioned an excerpt of his travels. The result is a typescript of 67 pages, which is now in his estate in the Cambridge University Library (folder A175).

On the basis of this data, we undertook to compile a complete list of his whereabouts. We were not interested in a faithful edition of the list. With the help of the diary, individual corrections were made and the missing years 1928 to 1931 were added. The data is incomplete insofar as a possible finer granulation - more precise points within cities, such as buildings and sights - has not been made consistently. These inconsistencies within the data will persist indefinitely, but can be easily filtered out. The source file with the data can be downloaded from gitHub.

Several visualizations have been implemented on this page, which make it possible to measure the geographical space in which Schnitzler has moved since he came of age. The experimental character should be explicitly emphasized. Visualizations can be added or removed at any time.
