The Department of Musicology is the most important non-university institution for musicological research in Austria.

Whereas the main focus is on Austrian music history, a Central European perspective is achieved by including those regions which have been closely related to present-day Austria for centuries, particularly in cultural respect. Long-term projects in musical philology (complete editions of composers) and lexicography actively contribute to the preservation of and research on music as a cultural heritage.

Projects with a genuine digital focus more specifically expediate the use of DH technologies in musicology. Expanding its portfolio towards inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches, the department also emphasizes research areas such as the history of musicology as a discipline, musical iconography, and the study of audiovisual media.
