The research unit Linguistics includes the entirety of the ACDH-CH's linguistic activities. Its goal is to strengthen and promote research in the context of digital linguistics. Since the establishment of the department in 2021 there has been a strong focus on the research of variation and change in the German language in Austria, especially lexicon (see WBÖ and LIÖ), morphology (esp. word formation) and syntax.

In addition, the department's profile has been broadened through research on other Germanic languages (for example the Anglistic projects within the research unit) as well as on other language families (as for example projects on multilingualism or on varieties of Arabic) in the last few years.
