The wire-cut EDM from Mitsubishi is the workhorse of our workshop and allows the fabrication of a large variety of specimens for our daily needs in research. In contrast to “traditional” machining methods (turning, milling, grinding and drilling) the material removal process in EDM is based on an electrical spark that is ignited between the workpiece and the electrode (wire), which is immersed in a dielectric medium. Typical of this machining method difficult to machine or brittle materials, such as tungsten or metallic glasses, can be cut with high precision and good surface finish.
