Melt spinning is a technique for rapid solidification of metals. In this process, pieces of alloy (up to 5 grams) are melted inside a quartz or graphite tube; once the desired temperature is reached, the molten metal is pushed onto a rotating copper wheel. The molten material rapidly solidifies into thin ribbons upon contact with the cold surface of the copper wheel. The constant rotation of the copper wheel allows for the continuous production of the metallic ribbons.
