"Meidlinger L" as perceived by people in Vienna: explaining the term based on the perception of its acoustic characteristics

The special nature of the speech sound termed "Meidlinger L" is frequently discussed in the media. However, there are hardly any scientific studies that aim at defining this term. The goal of the project is to conduct a large-scale perception study among the Viennese population to assess which acoustic characteristics a sound L must have in order to be perceived as an instance of "Meidlinger L".

Project duration: 1^st October 2023 - 30^th September 2024

The project is funded by the City of Vienna Fund and the OeAW for a duration of 12 months.

Team members are Eva Reinisch (PI), Jan Luttenberger, Yaqian Huang and Stefan Dzever.
