The 3rd International Conference of the association ‘Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum’ (Digital Humanities in German speaking regions – DHd 2016) took place from March 7-11 2016 at the University of Leipzig.
The main theme of Dhd 2016 was ‘Modelling – Networking – Visualisation: Digital Humanities as a transdisciplinary research paradigm’. The second annual ‘European Association for the Digital Humanities’ Symposium (EADH day) as well as numerous pre-conference workshops were held in conjunction with DHd 2016.
The ACDH was strongly represented at the conference. ACDH members gave presentations and talks already during the pre-conference workshops on Monday and Tuesday: Claudia Resch introduced the Austrian Baroque Corpus ABaC:us at a workshop on ‘Development and use of interdisciplinary repositories for historical textbased corpora’, Vanessa Hannesschläger gave a lightning talk on the PARTHENOS project at the EADH day.
On Tuesday night, the conference was officially opened. Katharina Anna Zweig gave the opening keynote ‘From digital humanities to humane digitization’. During the three conference days, ACDH members were very busy: Eveline Wandl-Vogt spoke about ‘Technical and social Infrastructures for the Humanities’, presenting ‘the Example of the Dagaree-English-Cantonese Dictionary’ together with Adams Bodomo from the University of Vienna. Vanessa Hannesschläger talked about ‘DH projects of Austrian literary archives’, giving a ‘trouble report’ on the status quo. In addition, the ACDH organized a panel on ‘Sustainability of technical solutions for digital editions’, which was moderated by Peter Andorfer and opened with a statement by Matej Ďurčo on ACDH’s corpus_shell. In addition, numerous ACDH posters were shown in the poster exhibition: Ulrike Czeitner presented current work on semantic modelling in the Baedeker Corpus, Daniel Schopper showed the state of the CFDB project carried out in cooperation with the University of Vienna, and Tanja Wissik and Matej Ďurčo informed interested researchers about the dariahTeach project. Three more ACDH posters were even presented at the poster slam: Thierry Declerck showed ‘Ontologisation of Thompson Motif’s Index’, Melanie Seltmann presented the tasty explore.bread.AT! poster and Eveline Wandl-Vogt gave a brief introduction to the ‘SADE use case at the DARIAH competence centre’. During the members meeting on Thursday evening, Melanie Seltmann’s work for the DHd association was especially highlighted by the board.
The conference ended on Friday at noon with the closing keynote by Daniel A. Keim on ‘The role of the human and the computer in digital humanities’. The ACDH members left Leipzig with many new contacts and filled with fresh impressions and ideas from talks, presentations and discussions.
