League of Nations loans: Controversial rescue package for Austria

With millions in loans, the League of Nations provided economic stimulus to restore Austria´s economy out of the financial crisis in 1922 and 1932. One of the conditions: No "Anschluss" into Nazi Germany. Historian Walter Iber explains at a conference at the OeAW, why the offer of the victorious Allies caused controversy in Austria`s National Council - and why at the same time the annexation to Germany seemed across party lines promising to many.
