Austria has participated in two large-scale research initiatives, the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), since 2001, and the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), since 2004. Researchers from the Universities of Vienna, Graz, Leoben, Innsbruck and Salzburg, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), the Natural History Museum Vienna and the OeAW have had great successes working on research projects in these programmes and in some cases also served as principal investigators or (co-)chief scientists respectively.

ICDP

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) seeks to conduct basic research in order to gain a better understanding of geological processes and Earth evolution. To this end, it conducts deep drilling on a national basis and scientific assessment of the results. The ICDP is one of the world’s most important and most successful Earth science programmes. As an Earth science programme led and operating internationally and studying fundamental aspects of geosciences that are of global importance, its findings benefit all of the Earth sciences. Moreover, the ICDP also offers excellent opportunities for international networking on the highest scientific level.

Representatives in ICDP:

  • Christian Köberl (ÖAW/Universität Wien)
    ICDP Executive Committee
  • Bernhard Plunger (ÖAW)
    ICDP Assembly of Governors

IODP

As an international large-scale scientific research programme, the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) examines transdisciplinary topics in order to make significant contributions to our understanding of the Earth’s system from the perspective of Earth sciences. Drilling expeditions on the high seas extract core samples from the ocean floors for scientific analysis. In addition to Earth sciences, biosciences and technological fields are firmly established within the IODP. With their focus on global change, from a socio-economic perspective too the programme’s research topics are also of great importance for society as a whole.

The IODP offers participating researchers an involvement with a leading, internationally established research network.
