Forever chemicals, financial influencers, glacier melt – new ITA report for Austrian Parliament
03.12.2025
Alpine natural hazards in climate change
Global warming is leading to rapid glacier melt, thawing of permafrost, and increased precipitation in the Alps. The risk of landslides and glacier breaks is rising. ITA researcher Niklas Gudowsky-Blatakẽs analyses remote sensing options, such as drones or satellite data, and presents examples of early warning systems. A nationwide system could help with forecasts.
Does investment advice really come cheap?
Financial influencers (‘finfluencers’) present financial topics in a simple and understandable way on social media. However, many have no formal training or certification in the financial sector. Misinformation, risky investment recommendations and a lack of risk diversification are often the consequences for consumers. The analysis by ITA researcher Anna Pauls for Parliament represents a step towards regulation and better consumer information.
Forever chemicals in the water
‘Forever chemicals’, or PFAS molecules, pose a significant challenge for water treatment due to their persistence, mobility and potential impact on human health. From January 2026, a new limit for PFAS in drinking water will apply. ITA researcher Jean Schmitt provides an overview of the technical possibilities for removing these molecules and monitoring drinking water and wastewater treatment plants.
Avoiding animal testing through simulation
Human organs-on-chips are human tissue on membranes with control options that mimic parts of organs or even multiple organs. The tissue is exposed to stimuli – such as drugs and chemicals – and its reactions are measured with sensors. Although organs on electronic chips are not currently a complete replacement for animal testing, they can help to reduce it. ITA researcher Fabian Fischer has analysed this issue for Parliament.
The current monitoring report proposes topics for further studies. It aims to inform parliamentarians and their staff about current socio-technical developments and provide them with independent expertise.
