Media coverage of risks and responsibility in the automation debate

The rapid diffusion of algorithms, robots and artificial intelligence is accompanied by public debates about applications and opportunities as well as emerging risks such as the loss of jobs, manipulation, security threats and violations of privacy. This raises questions regarding responsibility for damage and problematic impacts of automation. Media reporting on risks and responsibilities plays a central role in shaping public perception of automation. The project therefore investigated…

Study on women's representation in political news: media reactions

Female voices are still underrepresented in political news in Austria and journalism itself plays a crucial role for this asymmetry: Women's representation depends on journalists' own gender and on journalistic culture, while newsrooms' gender guidelines do not automatically ensure a fair gender diversity. These are the key learnings of a recent paper by CMC's Andreas Riedl, Tobias Rohrbach (University of Fribourg) and CMC's Christina Krakovsky. Austrian journalism has itself now…

Measuring Media Pluralism in the EU

The implementation of the EU-funded Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM) 2022 indicates (like the MPM 2021) that media pluralism in Austria is at medium risk in all but one of the areas of investigation (Market plurality, Political independence, Social inclusiveness). Only the area of Fundamental protection shows a low risk. The study, carried out by Josef Seethaler and Maren Beaufort, shows that three out of twenty indicators even represent a high risk: Market concentration – offline and…

A global view on media accountability

The concept of media accountability has originally been developed in the context of Western media systems. However, democratization processes around the globe have opened new spaces for media quality monitoring in countries formerly characterized by rigid press control. A new comparative study attempts to de-Westernize the debate about media accountability by offering a global view on recent developments.

Ready for the Future? Public Broadcasting in Austria

In a European comparison, public broadcasting in Austria is associated with high reach and trust ratings. CMC’s Maren Beaufort argues that in order to maintain this strong and democratically relevant position, it needs an improved legal framework and the entrepreneurial and journalistic courage to face up to changing social expectations and new forms of media usage behaviour. Strategically, this means – in addition to a modernized organizational structure that safeguards independence…

Visions for the Neighbourhood

About one third of all Austrian journalists work in local newsrooms, and their topics are the most read editorial content. The democratic relevance of these almost 1,800 Austrian journalists and their reporting, however, has received little attention for a long time. Not least thanks to crises, local journalism is freeing itself from its hillbilly image and dresses traditional strengths into innovative garb.

Our Mission

Media and communication research is one of the key disciplines of the modern media and information society. On the one hand, with the increasing dynamism and complexity of the political and social environment, the opportunity for individual primary experience is diminishing, as a result of which the importance of mediated experience is increasing. On the other hand, the growing diversity of media and new communication technologies are leading to new ways of dealing with content channelled through the media.
