The pre-conference, hosted by the CMC and organised by the ECREA Visual Cultures Section, brought together international scholars to explore the complex intersections of harmful visual media, digital practices and ethics. Topics covered included representations of war and violence, questions of regulation and moderation, far-right visual regimes, and the infrastructures of AI-generated content. The day explored the many ways in which harmful visuals are produced, circulated, governed, and researched. We also enjoyed a poster session, Tom Divon’s thought-provoking keynote and a lively fishbowl discussion to close the day. The pre-conference also highlighted the fruitful collaboration between the CMC and the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the University of Klagenfurt.

We were pleased to contribute to a stimulating day of interdisciplinary exchange and critical reflection ahead of ECC 2026 in Brno.
