The Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS) - Austria

Als Teil der weltgrößten Journalismusstudie „Worlds of Journalism“ untersucht eine repräsentative Befragung das Berufsfeld und lotet die Belastungen aus, denen sich professionelle Journalistinnen und Journalisten in Österreich ausgesetzt sehen. Unter dem Titel „Journalismus unter Druck: Risiken und Unsicherheiten in einer sich wandelnden Medienwelt“ ist die dritte Erhebungswelle der Worlds of Journalism Study angelaufen. Ziel des internationalen Forschungsverbunds ist es, den Zustand und Wandel des Journalismus zu untersuchen und die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse vergleichend einzuordnen – sowohl über nationale und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg als auch im Zeitverlauf. Forschungsteams in mehr als 100 Ländern nehmen teil und führen auf Grundlage eines gemeinsam entwickelten Fragebogens repräsentative Befragungen von Journalistinnen und Journalisten in ihren Ländern durch. Unterstützt wird diese einzigartige weltumspannende Kooperation der Journalismusforschung unter anderem von der UNESCO, Reporters without Borders und der International Federation of Journalists. Die Studienreihe dient Akteuren in Medien, Forschung und Politik als wichtige Informationsquelle.

In Österreich ist das das Institut für vergleichende Medien- und Kommunikationsforschung der österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gemeinsam mit der Universität Wien als nationalem Kooperationspartner mit der Realisierung des Projekts betraut. Ab 27. Februar 2023 führt das Team eine repräsentative Befragung hauptberuflicher Journalistinnen und Journalisten durch. Selbstverständlich werden dabei alle Bestimmungen der EU-Datenschutzgrundverordnung eingehalten. Neben dem österreichischen Länderreport fließen die Ergebnisse in Abstimmung mit den Projektteams in Deutschland und der Schweiz in gemeinsame Analysen der DACH-Region sowie darüber hinaus in den globalen Vergleich ein. Die weltweite Koordination liegt bei der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

Im Zentrum der Befragung steht der Umgang von Journalistinnen und Journalisten mit Risiken und Unsicherheiten in einer Medienwelt, die politisch, ökonomisch, technologisch und kulturell von stetigem Wandel geprägt ist. Dabei fokussiert die Studie auf sieben Schlüsselbereiche: redaktionelle Autonomie, wahrgenommene Einflüsse auf Journalismus, journalistische Rollen, journalistische Epistemologien, Berufsethik, Sicherheit und journalistische Arbeitsbedingungen.

Um den Ländervergleich zu ermöglichen, erfolgt die Befragung auf Grundlage eines einheitlichen methodischen Designs. Es umfasst einen gemeinsamen Fragebogen sowie Instruktionen zur Definition der Populationen, Stichprobenziehung, Durchführung der Datenerhebung sowie der Erfassung und Verarbeitung von Umfragedaten. Die Teilnehmenden werden in einer zweistufigen geschichteten Zufallsstichprobe ermittelt und anschließend kontaktiert.

Zusätzlich zu der repräsentativen Befragung werden in Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz im weiteren Projektverlauf verschiedene Gruppen sogenannter „peripherer Akteure“ befragt, die eher am Rande des etablierten Journalismus agieren.

As part of the world's largest journalism study, "Worlds of Journalism", a representative survey investigates the profession and examines the pressures professional journalists face in Austria. With the title "Journalism under Pressure: Risk and Uncertainty in a Changing Mediascape," the third wave of the Worlds of Journalism Study has been launched. The goal of the international research network is to examine the state of and changes in journalism and to compare the findings – both across national and cultural borders and over time. Research teams in more than 100 countries participate and conduct representative surveys of journalists in their countries on the basis of a collaboratively developed questionnaire. This unique global cooperation in journalism research is, among others, supported by UNESCO, Reporters without Borders and the International Federation of Journalists. The study series serves as an important source of information for actors in the media, in academia and in politics.

In Austria, the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, together with the University of Vienna as national cooperation partner, is responsible for realizing the project. Starting on 27 February 2023, the team will conduct a representative survey of full-time journalists. Of course, all provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation will be followed. In addition to the Austrian country report, the results will be incorporated into joint analyses of the DACH region in collaboration with the project teams in Germany and Switzerland, and also into global comparisons. The global coordination is handled by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

The survey focuses on how journalists deal with risks and uncertainties in a media world that is undergoing constant political, economic, technological and cultural changes. The study focuses on seven key areas: journalistic autonomy, perceived influences on journalism, journalistic roles, journalistic epistemologies, professional ethics, safety and journalistic working conditions.

To enable cross-country comparison, the survey is based on a common methodological approach. It includes a common questionnaire as well as instructions on defining populations, sampling, data collection procedures, and survey data processing. Participants are identified in a two-stage stratified random sampling process and subsequently contacted.

In addition to the representative survey, different groups of so-called "peripheral actors" who operate on the fringes of established journalism will be surveyed in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in the further course of the project.
