At the interdisciplinary conference European historians and experts in Cultural Studies will join African authors and scholars in the diaspora in analyzing testimonies of the very problematical relationship between Africa and the Occident. They will also investigate little-known phenomena of migration across the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. In view of the global spread of African pidgins they will document the complex linguistic consequences of this mobility. Apart from inspiring African personalities, who refute racist stereotypes, the lectures will explore the struggle for political and societal progress in African countries. They will also consider the recurrent if insufficiently known inversion in the direction of migrants since the postcolonial phase, which has complicated the diverse forms of cultural transfer and circulation. The Caribbean appears as an important crossroads of a fruitful encounter of African and other cultures.
Die Erhaltung der Biosphäre als Lebensraum für Pflanzen, Tiere und Menschen ist heute eines der dringlichsten globalen Anliegen. Angesichts von Raubbau und rasanter Urbanisierung stellt sich die Frage des Selbstverständnisses des Menschen im Kontext der Natur neu.
Die Konferenz an der ÖAW "Nature as Resource, Aesthetic Experience, and Source of Danger: International Interdisciplinary Conference" wird die Spannungsfelder aus den Perspektiven von Literaturwissenschaft, Kulturökologie, Philosophie und Theologie, aber auch aus den Biowissenschaften erörtern und dabei insbesondere die Anfänge der problematischen Entwicklungen der Moderne, wie sie in der Dichtung und der bildenden Kunst des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts dargestellt werden, beleuchten. Zudem werden der Extraktivismus im Amazonas-Biom und die Hinterlassenschaften des Kalten Krieges thematisiert. Schließlich sollen philosophische Ansätze diskutiert werden, die die Bedeutung des Erlebens natürlicher Schönheit als sensible Art des Umgangs mit der Natur hervorheben.
