Seminar: Machine learning in heliophysics - trailblazers in Graz

Ute Amerstorfer, Rachel Bailey (ZAMG), Martin Reiss and Hannah Rüdisser (TU Graz Know Center) present an overview of ongoing efforts to apply machine learning in various heliophysical contexts.

The IWF leads the work package „Machine Learning Solutions for Data Analysis and Exploitation in Planetary Science" of the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (EU Horizon 2020) project. The main aims of the work package are to develop machine learning (ML) powered data analysis tools optimized for planetary science and to foster the wider use of ML technologies in data driven space sciences. Ute Amerstorfer gives an overview of the work package and the ML activities within Europlanet. Three recent application are shortly highlighted: (1) Rachel Bailey talks about the application of LSTM algorithms to the prediction of geomagnetically induced currents, (2) Martin Reiss on Bz forecasts in CMEs and (3) Hannah Rüdisser on the automatic detection of ICMEs in solar wind data.
