Seminar: Human Space Flight Operations and SEP modelling
In human space flight operations, solar energetic particles (SEPs) pose a serious risk to astronaut health and mission success. During the Artemis missions, crew will no longer have the protective shielding of Earth’s magnetosphere. It is therefore crucial that we are able to forecast space weather events with enough advanced warning time to recommend that crew shelters in order to mitigate the risk. In this talk, we discuss human space flight operations, the space weather forecasting models that we currently use in operations, and what is required for validating these models.
