Colloquium: Stellar winds and their interactions with exoplanets

Associated Prof. Aline Vidotto, Leiden Observatory, The Netherlands, will talk about "Stellar winds and their interactions with exoplanets"

As the wind outflows from a star, it permeates the interplanetary medium, interacting with any planet it encounters. In this talk I will present some of our recent works on how winds of low-mass stars can affect surrounding exoplanets. In particular, I will talk about how winds can affect atmospheric evaporation and spectroscopic transit signatures. I will also present the other side of the story: how (and when) can exoplanets affect the host star, in particular, focusing on radio emission that exoplanets can induce in the coronae of stars. Altogether, these interactions can help us characterise the system, putting physical constraints on planetary properties (such as their still elusive magnetic fields) as well as properties of the winds of planet hosting stars.
