    RHYTHM IN OUR VEINS
    03.07.2019
interest in listening – they would probably rather be doing the singing themselves, because it's usually the males who sing for the females. How did you, as a native of Canada with German roots, end up in Vienna for your research? Höschele: There's a lot going on in this area of research here. Vienna is simply a good place in the world to study biomusicality.

Quantum times: when did the cuckoo sing?
    29.05.2020
We are used to the fact that events are sharply localised in time. In a cuckoo clock, the cuckoo always calls at a precise time. Everybody looking at the clock would agree on this. However, a team of physicists led by Caslav Brukner from the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences showed that, when quantum mechanics and Einstein’s general relativity are combined, this might no longer be the case. When time “goes quantum” the temporal localisability of events becomes relative. In quantum times, the cuckoo can call at a precise time according to one observer, but some other observers might be totally uncertain about the time when it sings.

Quantum revolution takes a leap forward
    06.02.2020
    1. “These so-called high-dimensional quantum states show advantages such as increased information capacity, strengthened noise resistance, and improved communication security”, says Marcus Huber, group leader at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. To harness these benefits, high-dimensional quantum gates that perform complex operations on high-dimensional quantum information are indispensable. Similar to their binary counterparts, these gates can act as future ...

Quantum physicists develop new method for cooling nanoparticles
    05.04.2019
nuclear physics, where similar challenges for quantum control exist", says Uros Delic, first author of the publication in Physical Review Letters, which resulted from a collaboration, led by Markus Aspelmeyer, between scientists from the University of Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The idea originally came from the Innsbruck physicist Helmut Ritsch and the US physicists Vladan Vuletic and Steve Chu, who realized ...

    Quantum particles: Pulled and compressed
    08.07.2021
Very recently, researchers led by Markus Aspelmeyer at the University of Vienna and Lukas Novotny at ETH Zurich cooled a glass nanoparticle into the quantum regime for the first time. To do this, the particle is deprived of its kinetic energy with the help of lasers. What remains are movements, so-called quantum fluctuations, which no longer follow the laws of classical physics but those of quantum physics. The glass sphere with which this has been achieved is significantly ...

    Quantum gravity’s tangled time
    22.08.2019
locations is different to placing an object in one or the other location randomly – it is another way for an object to exist, allowed by the laws of quantum physics. In their new study, scientists from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, University of Vienna, the University of Queensland (AUS) and the Stevens Institute of Technology (USA) have researched the question what happens when an object massive enough to influence the flow of time is placed in a quantum superposition ...

Quantum Encryption realized under the sea
    13.01.2020
An international team of researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna established a quantum encrypted connection between Sicily and Malta via a submarine cable. The record distance of 192 kilometres was a further step in the development of a secure quantum internet. The team now reports on their experiment in the journal "Nature Quantum Information".

QUANTUM TELEPORTATION ALLOWS ERROR CORRECTION IN QUANTUM COMPUTERS

value, even if individual errors occur. In the quantum world, things are much more complicated, since quantum information cannot be copied. A team of quantum physicists led by Anton Zeilinger of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna and Jian-Wei Pan of the University of Science and Technology of China has now produced a breakthrough. In their recent publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the researchers ...
