Seminar: Magnetosheath Jets - a key linking effect between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere

Florian Koller (PhD student, University of Graz) will talk about physical processes in near Earth space.

The measurement of the Earth's local plasma environment led to discoveries of previously unknown effects. In the magnetosheath, the turbulent region between the fast-incoming solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere, over the least three decades THEMIS spacecraft detected frequently dynamic pressure enhancements. These enhancements, which are now referred to as magnetosheath jets, are supposed to be generated at the bow shock. They can travel earthward through the magnetosheath and may be related to geomagnetic substorms when impacting the Earth’s magnetopause. In the frame of a FWF project, which is in collaboration between the IWF and the Institute of Physics of the University of Graz, we investigate how large-scale structures in the solar wind, such as CMEs and SIRs, influence these jets.
