After graduating from high school in Germany, Hartmut Dumke completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then, beginning in 1991, studied spatial planning and regional development at the Vienna University of Technology. Since receiving his degree in 1997, he has been conducting research, teaching, and publishing on topics related to regional planning, cross-border planning, integrated spatial and energy planning, and energy governance. He worked at mecca environmental consulting until 2011; since then, he has been employed at the Institute for Spatial Planning, and since April 2026, he has also been affiliated with the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). The underlying principle of his oevre is that innovative urban development always requires the highly challenging task of bridging the gap between physical and social spaces.
