Glacier monitoring of Mullwitzkees includes creating a summer and winter mass balance using the direct glaciological method (Hoinkes 1970) and the Fixed Date System.

Mass balance studies using the glaciological method are based on measuring various points on a glacier directly. Within one hydrologic year – i.e. from 1 October to 30 September of the following year – gains and losses in mass are measured. Changes in mass vis-à-vis the previous year are the result of integrating point measurements across the entire glacier area.
