(RE)CONCEPTUALIZING THE CHALCOLITHIC IN ASIA MINOR AND CYPRUS

From its inception the Chalcolithic period has been portrayed as an eventless era stretching the period of time between the significant transitions to Neolithic farming societies on the one hand, and Bronze Age hierarchical and complex societies, on the other. While it is easy to critique this conceptualization of an eventless era as inherently flawed, it much less simple to overcome the Childean research paradigm that constitutes the very DNA of archaeology and replace it with a positive research agenda for the Chalcolithic. In this talk I will attempt some steps in this direction drawing on recent data from Asia Minor and Cyprus.
