PALACES AND BEYOND: ANALYSING POTTERY FROM THE NE PELOPONNESE AND SARONIC GULF AT THE END OF THE MYCENAEAN PERIOD

This talk will consider recent analysis of pottery production and consumption in LHIIIB–IIIC early in and around the Saronic Gulf in comparison with on-going work on transport jars from Tiryns in the Argolid. While the Saronic Gulf has no generally acknowledged palatial centres and a ‘bottom-up’ approach reveals a picture of wide distribution of pottery from three main centres of production, some key sites have very few transport jars of the sort that we are familiar with from Palatial Centres and the harbour of Kommos in Crete. In contrast, the destruction deposits if the Mycenaean Palace at Tiryns paints and picture of the long-distance movement of liquid commodities.
