Gerhard Oberhammer's hermeneutics of religion has been a topic of interdisciplinary symposia for many years. The symposia are thematically related workshops with Indologists, Buddhologists as well as Protestant and Catholic theologists which take place in regular intervals at the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia. The religio-hermeneutic themes debated in presentations and discussions during the symposia include "spatio-temporality of transcendence" (1993), "language and transcendence" (mythologization, 2000) and "Glaubensgewissheit und Wahrheit in religiöser Tradition" (2004). These themes were approached from various disciplinary perspectives, developed further, contrasted with other theological and religio-philosophical theories, and implemented for individual religious traditions of India and Japan. The results of these workshops have been published in collected volumes in the Contributions to the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia.
