Oliver Jens Schmitt ist Director of the Research Unit Balkan Studies.
Oliver Jens Schmitt studied Byzantine studies, modern Greek, East European history and Greek philology in Basel, Vienna, Berlin and Munich. He received his PhD in 2000. From 2000 to 2001, he was a fellow at the Swiss Institute in Rome. He completed his habilitation (venia for East and Southeast European history) in Regensburg in 2003. In 2004, he won an SNF professorship at the University of Bern. Since 2005, he has been professor of Southeast European history at the University of Vienna. In 2010, he was professeur invité at the Collège de France. He has been a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2011, and president of the Division of Humanities and the Social Sciences 2017-2022, director of the research unit Balkan Studies since 2017.
