Michael Metzeltin was an honorary associate in the research unit Balkan Studies.
Michael Metzeltin was born in Sorengo (Switzerland) in 1943. He studied Romance languages at the universities of Basel, Zurich, Salamanca, Coimbra and Padua. He received his PhD in 1969 from the University of Basel in Ibero-Romance philology, French linguistics and Italian literature. In 1972, he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel and was awarded the venia legendi for ‘Romance Philology’. He was professor at the universities of Trier, Groningen, Coimbra, Cosenza, Paderborn, Göttingen and Vienna. Michael Metzeltin has been professor emeritus since 2011. He is doctor honoris causa of various universities and a member of several scientific academies. He is the co-founder and co-editor of 'Romanistisches Kolloquium’ (RK, 26 volumes, since 1984) and of ‘Lexikon der Romanistischen Linguistik’ (LRL, 12 volumes, 1988–2005). His main research foci are: romance linguistic typology, text theory, discourse analysis and identity research.
